Welcome to The Natural Alternative Doula Services
l
Providing support with heart and sincerity

Congratulations! You’ve probably found your way to this site because you’re pregnant.  A Birth Doula or Postpartum Doula can help to make your experience a positive and memorable one.

Doula – a Greek word meaning a woman who serves. In labour support terminology, a doula refers to a specially trained birth companion (not a friend or loved one) who provides labour support. She performs no clinical tasks. Doula also refers to lay women who are trained or experienced in providing postpartum care (mother and newborn care, breastfeeding support and advice, cooking, child care, errands, and light cleaning) for the new family. To distinguish between the two types of doulas, the terms birth doulas and postpartum doulas are used.

WHAT IS A BIRTH DOULA?:
l

  • Provides emotional support, comfort measures, and an objective viewpoint, as well as helping you obtain the information you need to make informed decisions.
  • Becomes familiar with your birth plan (expectations, hopes, and concerns about the birth of your baby).
  • Remains with you as a constant support throughout the labour and birth process.
  • Provides guidance to partners, allowing them to participate at their own comfort level.
  • Helps you and your partner create an ideal atmosphere for your birth experience at home or in the hospital.
  • Recognizes childbirth as an experience that you will remember for the rest of your life.

WHAT IS A POST PARTUM DOULA?:
l

  • Offer education, non-judgemental support, and companionship during the postpartum period.
  • Assists with newborn care, family adjustment, meal preparation, breastfeeding support and light household chores.
  • Provides appropriate referrals when necessary

PARTNERS AND DOULA:
l

When it comes to pregnancy, birth and parenting, partners are accepted members of the mother's support team. They are actively involved in easing the mother's labour pain, welcoming the baby at the moment of birth, and helping to care for the newborn at home. Labour and postpartum doulas can help the partners experience this special time with confidence.

Birth is not only about making babies.
Birth is about making mothers  - strong, competent, capable mothers who
trust themselves and know their inner strength.
